Five Grid Name Calculator
A transparent Five Grid (Wu Ge) calculator for Chinese names. Enter the characters and their verified Kangxi stroke counts; every result comes with the arithmetic so you can check it yourself.
Calculated entirely in your browser. Your name is never uploaded and no account is needed.
Enter 1–2 characters for each part of the name, with the same number of integer stroke counts from 1 to 64.
How the five grids are calculated
- Heaven: add one for a single-character family name; add both characters for a compound family name. Personality: the last family-name character plus the first given-name character.
- Earth: add the given-name strokes, adding one for a single-character given name. Total: add every actual character stroke in the full name.
- Outer: Total minus Personality; add two for a single family name with a single given name, one when only one part has two characters, and zero when both have two characters.
- Three Talents use the final digit of Heaven, Personality and Earth: 1/2 Wood, 3/4 Fire, 5/6 Earth, 7/8 Metal, 9/0 Water.
Why enter stroke counts yourself?
Wu Ge traditionally uses Kangxi radical-based counts, which can differ from modern written strokes. For example, the 氵 radical is counted as Water with four strokes. Rather than guess with an incomplete dictionary, this prototype calculates from counts you have verified. It is a traditional symbolic system, not a scientific score or a deterministic verdict on a life.
Questions about Chinese name grids
Do I count simplified or traditional character strokes?
Wu Ge normally refers to Kangxi radical and traditional-form stroke conventions, not simply the strokes of a modern simplified character. Use the Kangxi source you trust; this page handles the grid and element calculations.
Does it support compound family names and single given names?
Yes. One- or two-character family and given names are supported, with the relevant Heaven, Earth and Outer rules applied to each combination.
Why is there no automatic good-or-bad score?
Auspicious-number tables vary between traditions and sources. This prototype prioritises verifiable arithmetic and elements rather than presenting an unverified score as a definitive judgment.
